For as long as I can remember, we have had drainage issues in the tub at our current apartment. It used to appear that it was just a slow drain, with maybe a half inch of water pooling when I took a shower. Slowly but surely, it's gotten worse and worse.
This may or may not have been exacerbated by
We've tried Liquid Drano, we've tried plunging the daylights out of it, we've tried one of those snake things on the infomercials that claim to fix ANY backed up pipe (that was a really gross experience, by the way). It all seems to work for about 10 minutes, but the next shower inevitably ends up being half shower, half bath.
Example: I shaved my legs in the shower the other day, and the water was above my ankles. That's like, 4 inches people.
Another example: I decided to rinse out my red hair dye (did I tell you guys I'm dying my red hair.. red?) while I was in the shower about a month ago. It looked like I was standing in a pool of blood. And yes, it left a temporary ring around the tub. Ew.
So yesterday we tried FOAMING Drano. I have no idea what the difference is between that and regular gel/liquid Drano, but Scot was all about it. By the way he was talking, I thought it be magical.
Guess what?
I'm not sure why I look like I have clown feet. Gross.
It didn't work. I took this about 2 minutes after getting out of a 5 minute shower. 5 minutes!!
Don't get me wrong, I love baths.. when I actually want to take a bath. And when I'm not standing in 4 inches of soapy Steph filth water.
I'm not sure what is down that pipe (besides pine needles that are still surfacing after 7 months), but we're at our wits end. We're moving soon (foreshadowing!) and would very much like to not lose half our security deposit because of a drain.
Speaking of which, our bathtub sink drain is pretty backed up too. I did not put pine needles down that one.
Any suggestions of something that might work or what might be the issue here? Help would be appreciated!

We had that same problem! Isn't it disgusting? Drano Max worked on ours. Ross dumped A LOT in there I think, though... and we definitely made sure there was no gross hair stuck in there. Beyond that, plumber?
We had the same problem... It ended up being hair. So disgusting!! I hope you get something figured out!
We had/have this problem all the time. If you live in an apartment with an on-site handyman/woman, ask them to come in and give it a shot. Most apartment complexes will have this industrial strength chemical that they'll pour down the drain - for the life of me, I can't remember the name but it works like a charm. It basically "eats" anything in the drain and keeps it clear.
Our piping problem is because I have super long hair that gets stuck in the drain so we have to do this every five to six months.
Good luck!
I had this problem in our old place. I bought that draino stuff that has the pellets and let it stand for a VERY long time and used about 10x the recommended amount, then while it was settling I plunged away with a plunger and it just worked!
I don't know why you'd lose your security deposit over this though, I doubt they'd even notice :P
Good luck!!!!
Our school uses and industrial strength clog remover, I think it's sulfur based? So it stinks to high heaven but burns the crap out of whatever clog is in there. Check your local plumbing store? Good luck!
we have the same problem i have to use drno weekly because hubby washes off grease and junk ever night and the drain gets clogged
Same problem in my sink in our bathroom but I know it's from my hair. I shed like a dog! We've literally used five bottles of Drano in the past 8 months. It always works for a while, but it just clogs back up. I think our only option is to have it snaked. Also, if you live in an apartment, you can call maintenance for stuff like that. Don't tell them about the tree, though!
I love the photo evidence, firstly.
I would have the landlord get involved at this point. Do they have a maintenance crew? Otherwise, I'm afraid I don't have many tips for unclogging showers. That is such a pain!!!
Oh man, what a pain! I don't have any advice, but I'm sure if you call the landlord they can have someone come out and fix it!
