It started out with a trip to Michael's last week that ended up lightening my wallet much more than I originally anticipated. Then we went to The Container Store (um, best store ever) today and bought a crap ton of random/awesome things. So I figured, what with the all the little changes and fixes around the apartment, I'd share some with you! You lucky ducks. Quack.
Without further ado, DIY project numero uno: earring holder.
I've mentioned how much I love earrings, especially big statement ones. However, I have been shamefully storing them all in my jewelry "box" like so:
Well, I've seen different earring holders in stores and such, but really loved the one I saw in Em's bathroom.. that her mom made! It's basically an awesome, large frame with wire mesh stapled (I think?) to the back of it - perfect for hanging basically every hook earring she owns. Love it. And love that it was DIY even more.
So I figured I'd try my own version of this. I scoured Michael's and was able to find two 8x10 open back frames, and two plastic yarn backer thingys (see below since I have no freaking clue what they are really called).
Those things on the right.. you know what I mean? Sometimes they have color coded squares so you know what to sew?
My descriptive vocab stuns me sometimes.
Here's my attempt at an easy-peasy tutorial:
1. Size and cut the plastic yarn backer thingy to the frame.
Look at those mad cutting skillz!
It's very hard to take pictures and glue, btw.
I kinda started in the middle. Whatever.
4. Long and short of it: Glue down the corners and one line down each side so the plastic yarn backer thingy is secure to the frame and isn't loose or buckling.
Yes, part of the glue is white. I may have run out of regular, clear glue sticks and had to use my white ones.
Why do I have white ones? Stick around and you'll find out ;)
5. Do it all over again and wham, bam, thank you ma'am... two earring holders!
Drumroll please...
The one thing you have to make sure of this that the frames hang away from the wall enough to allow the hook earrings to hang and not fall out. A lot of my earrings are hanging at an angle so that the wall doesn't push them out. Does that make sense?
I'm so excited to have these hanging up, and the two of them combined probably cost $20 all together? Not bad!! Hooray for inexpensive and EASY projects :)

What a great idea! My method of jewelry storage is rather embarrassing. I should take note from you. I loved your tutorial! Hilarious and informative at the same time! Lord knows I'm not that crafty-- right there with ya!
YAY! So glad you did the tutorial! I am seriously craft challenged but this looks easy enough. I think I know what plastic yarny things you're talking about, too. It looks great! Good job Steph.
In yo' FACE, Martha.
Very nice! I have a really cool earring holder but all the holes collect dust like no other... it's so annoying
I LOVE LOVE LOVE LVOE LOVE the new header.
That is all.
Love your craftiness!! I'm totally jealous! I need to make more time for crafting! I have my jewelry hanging on a cork board. It looks cute AND is function!

AWESOME! I've wanted to make one of these so bad. ^_^ You rock, Ma'am!
What a creative idea!! Love it and your blog :)
I love the idea of using the yarn loop thingys! I've always seen it done with window mesh, but this is a much more accessible idea, thanks!
This project sounds super easy. I think I need more earrings so I can make this!
(LOVING your new header fyi.)
LOVE this! I was explaining something exactly like this to Chad and he wasn't getting it! I'm so glad you did this! Now, you need more earrings my dear! Let's go shopping! :)
YAY! So glad I could give you some inspiration. Fyi, yes I'm taking total credit for this and not giving any credit to my mom. (She's so damn crafty and I hate it. Ok I love it, I'm just jealous. I have issues.) Everything looks fantastic!
