Times, they are a-changin'

The first movie I ever saw in theaters was The Little Mermaid.

While I was born after a lot of the Disney "classics" were released, I definitely saw all of them and owned a decent number of them on VHS. I'm pretty sure almost every child around my age grew up with Disney - the cartoons, the musicals, the princesses. I mean, how could you not? Even if you didn't see all of the movies, if I mentioned Scuttle and a dinglehopper, you'd know what I was talking about (well you SHOULD).

Needless to say, it blows my mind that so many kids these days aren't really that familiar with the Disney classics. I know they all came out a while ago and it's not the cool, new thing anymore - but I think these kids need to know. I think that parents should make it a point to show their kids the movies of their childhood. Start 'em out young so they don't have the chance to say "mooooooom I'm not watching your dumb old cartoon movies." I also think they will appreciate Disney World MUCH more if they actually know who Cinderella is and why she has a big ol' castle in the middle of everything. Right?

Right.

Well Disney clearly realizes that people want to start/continue collecting their movies for just that reason (as well as others), especially now that they are available in DVD/Blu Ray format. And those geniuses developed that nasty "vault" where all the movies reside until they are good and ready to release them to the masses.

Consider Scot and I the masses. We are determined to have a good collection going by the time we have kids of our own. They WILL know the Disney classics (as well as some of my personal favorites), and dear lord I hope they love them.

So far our personal collection includes the following:

In case you can't tell from that terrible iPhone photo.. it's Bambi, Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, Pinocchio, and Alice in Wonderland.

I literally get email notifications the day that a new classic (I think they call some of them the Diamond Editions?) comes out. Then off I trot to Best Buy to snatch that baby up. Weird? Maybe. Awesome? Yes.

Anyone else (re)collecting the Disney movies? Is there a particular reason why or why not?

Ok, don't make fun but I do the same with Winnie the Pooh. If my kid hates Pooh I'll be devasted.

You're choices are great!!! Snow White to this day is still my favorite!

I definitely want to! I haven't started collecting them because I didn't know the format movies would be in when I started having kids - maybe bluray is a safe bet, but I don't have one haha - so I'll just have to wait!

We definitely try to do the same! We want to have the Disney movies for our kids someday. I don't know how many we have, but I know for sure we have my two favorites (Alice in Wonderland and Sleeping Beauty) and Corey's favorite (Lion King)
