Yum Yum Delicioso!

Let's talk about the food & drinkage en Mexico.

I didn't really eat much of it, to be honest. Drinks tend to fill you up (mango daquiri anyone?) and the heat/sun/salt water combo kind of decreased my appetite. Go on vacation and lose three pounds? I'll take it.

The food I did eat, however, was phenomenal. I made sure to have guacamole at least once every day. It was often my lunch.

I wish they gave me a spoon instead of chips. I lapped that shiz up every time.

The cool thing about the beaches at Playa (and I'm sure other coastal areas of Mexico) is that they are lined with clubs/restaurants/bars, each with chairs and umbrellas outside on the beach. Most have a minimum consumption fee ($100-200 pesos/$10-20 USD), which is absolutely affordable - one or two drinks and an order of guac over 5 hours and you're set.

We frequented two places on the beach to lay, eat, and drink - Blue Parrot and Zenzi - the latter of which was my favorite. Their guac was killer, as well as well as their ceviche. And mojitos.

Gaby even ordered their arrechera sandwich on two separate occaions, she liked it so much!

By the by, you all know don't eat red meat.. but this stuff was de.li.cious. I don't think you can even find it in the US! I definitely recommend it (arrechera, that is).

Friday evening, we went to this adorable Italian restaurant off the beaten path a bit - it's owned by a married Italian couple, and all their pasta is homemade and made to order. I got salmon with pine nuts in a creamy sauce.. oh. emm. gee.

Do you believe that I ate this entire thing?! And I wish I had another plate of it right this instant.
Braden, who has been to Italy, said that this place's pasta beat out that in Italy by FAR. How nuts (pine nuts!) is that?

One of my favorite meals was actually breakfast the first morning I was in Playa; Gaby and I went to this little restuarant off of Avenida Quinta (Playa's 'main road' of sorts). All I got was fruit with yogurt and granola, but I promise you that it was the best freaking fruit ever. Melon, kiwi, banana, and some other fruit with the consistancy of an apple but 10 times more delicious. Nom.

You really can't beat the fresh fruit in Mexico. If and when you all go, you must order fresh fruit and fruit juice as much as possible! Even just their melon (cantalope) juice.. delicious and more refreshing than their lemonade.. which is made with sparkling water and is the bomb dot com. I'm definitely going to miss it!

I also can't get over the frozen drinks. Pina coladas, daquiris, margaritas.. all made fresh to order and not out of those gross frozen drink machines. Pina coladas with actual chunks of coconut? You can't beat it.

I have to admit that we attempted to save money by making a grocery store (Wal-mart) run to stock up on eggs, milk, turkey and cheese, bread, etc, at the beginning of the trip. Gaby made us eggs and toast a couple times for breakfast, and that turkey and cheese came in handy at night after some drinks and dancing!

All in all.. I'm SO going to miss the food and drinks there. And I don't mean drinks as in WOOOOO-spring-break-let's-get-drunk! drinks (because really, the club drinks taste like water and I think I got legit drunk once the whole trip?). Everything was just so delicious and I wish that I could get all of it here in DC! (Keep on dreaming.)

What town/state/country have you been to that you just loveddd the food (and/or drinks)?!

There's not much better than some seriously good fresh fruit. When we visited Hawaii years ago, it was all I ate most mornings for breakfast.

The ceviche looks so delicious! I'm jealous that you went on vacation and actually lost weight - I always seem to gain five pounds whenever I travel. A few years ago I was in Italy and had the best food of my life in Florence - so yummy.

What was the name of the italian place?! We ate at one in Cozumel on some side street and it was amazing! Sorisi's or something like it!

OMG. I'm starving now. Starving. I love Mexican food... granted it's so much different than Tex-Mex (which is a staple here) but it is so wonderful!

I loved loved loved the food in Italy. It is a dining experience that seems to never end. You start with pasta, go to salad, then entrees!

Pico is one of my favorite things. I'm not a guac fan but I could eat the hell out of the pico. And that pasta... whoaboy. I NEED that in my life RIGHT NOW!
